My story

I still pinch myself that I've landed here

How a birthday present to myself turned into a wedding floral studio in Alfred Cove.

Belinda, founder and floral stylist at Rose and Lily Floral Haus Belinda

After feeling so trapped at home with a baby during COVID and not allowed to go anywhere, and having two energetic little boys with me who were supposed to be at school — I thought, I want to do something different with my life.

I wanted to do something where I wasn't sitting at a desk all day. I didn't want to be guilted into feeling like I had to choose between work and my kids every hour of the day. And I wanted to feel more joy in my job and still earn enough money.

It was widely joked about amongst my friends — getting a side gig that earnt millions with little effort, and we got to stay home with our kids. Was this really possible?!

I gave myself a birthday present of a wedding flower course, just to see if I liked it.

Finding it

A course, then a calling

With much thorough investigation into small business, and small business ownership whilst juggling motherhood, I did the course, had some natural talent, and was then offered a job at Maple and Wren — whose wedding flower course I'd attended.

After honing my skills I soon started my business, and it has been a dream to make flowers for so many lovely couples. I still pinch myself that I've landed here.

I have achieved total control of my flexibility and my income, and a massive amount of joy designing flowers and being part of people's wedding days. I get to work from home, which means I'm not away from my family every day.

Eco conscious by choice

Why I design without foam

Early in my florist journey I decided to centre my business on eco conscious floral mechanics, after realising the high amounts of toxic foam and waste involved in weddings and other one-off events.

I knew I wanted to offer couples a premium, eco friendly flower design service, and I'm continuing to learn new techniques and test new mechanics every season to reduce my impact on the environment. With many couples wanting modern organic styling, I felt this was the best way to achieve a whole eco friendly service and organic vibe.

It's also what sat best with me. I just didn't really like using floral foam from the beginning — I didn't like the look and feel of it, I found it frustrating to use because it would break up so easily, and when I used other mechanics I liked the look of my arrangements more. So I came up with new ways to design.

Don't get me wrong — it has been hard work. Becoming a florist, a website developer, a content creator, a Xero expert, and navigating the world of weddings, venues and vendors. But I am here loving it: loving designing your wedding flowers, and promising you an exceptionally easy way to design and book in your wedding flowers with me.

I absolutely love the joy of seeing people see their wedding flowers for the first time — delivering the bridal bouquet for all the ooh's and ahh's, and seeing creative flower installations completely bring a space and a special event to life.
